The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) issues ship station licenses and radio operator permits.
The ship station license is issued to the vessel and registers all the vessel’s radio transmitting equipment, including radar, with the FCC. In turn the FCC issues the vessel a set of call signs that are used to identify the vessel when making radio calls on either VHF or SSB radio. A Ship’s Station Licenses may be issued to any vessel, and is required for all inspected vessels, towing vessels over 26 feet in length, and all uninspected vessels greater than 65 feet in length.
The operator of a vessel that has a ship’s station license is required to hold an FCC license as Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP) or higher. This module meets all FCC testing requirements.
