Short Range (radio)
Learn VHF/SSB and GMDSS in this Prerequisite for Your Yachtmaster Exam
A VHF radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures of use. Additionally, holding a Short Range Certificate is a vital qualification required by law when operating a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). Confident Captain aids individuals in providing the proper instruction for using a fixed or hand-held marine VHF radio. Our RYA VHF Radio Online SRC Course requires roughly 5-8 hours of home study in preparation for the online course final.
Prepare and Take Your Exam With Us!
After successful completion of the RYA VHF Radio course online, the candidate will need to take an oral examination with Confident Captain. The in-person exam and practical assessment can be taken at Confident Captain or at a RYA Training Center.
Know What to Expect During Your In-person Exam
To take the exam and issue the certificate, the RYA charges $60 that can be paid by check, credit, or debit card. In order to prove that a candidate has successfully completed the pre exam course, it is required to present a printed version of the exam application form. The exam itself includes the use of radio simulators and a short written test conducted by an independent assessor (who is paid by the RYA, not by the training center).
Please note: At Confident Captain, the SRC Exams are held on the first Saturday of every month except for June – August. During those months no oral exams are offered unless pre-arranged with a member of our staff.
