Newport, RI (29 March 2018) – Confident Captain/Ocean Pros, a maritime safety, licensing and training facility, is teaming up with the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association to hold a 5-day launch tender training course over three weekends in April and costs are 100% covered for qualified applicants.
“This is our third year partnering with RIMTA to offer the Launchtender program,” said Kent Dresser, President and Founder of Confident Captain. “It is gratifying as a small business owner to be able to offer high-quality job training for our fellow Rhode Islanders while also helping the local marine industry find qualified workers.”
A launch is a vessel that transports people to boats moored or anchored in a harbor. Those who successfully complete the course will have the certification and skills they need to safely and legally operate a launch in coastal waters, which include the nearly 100 yacht clubs and marinas in Rhode Island.
The comprehensive course will take a maximum of 15 students through the steps they need to become a launch tender. Training will include: a 16-hour USCG Limited Master (launch tender) course; an 8-hour USCG/STCW approved First Aid/CPR course; An 8-hour safe boating course with an exam proctored by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management; An FCC Marine Radiotelephone Operator’s exam (FCC/MROP); and one day of license application and submission consultation.
Applicants seek this training must be 17 years old and be either unemployed or underemployed. Also, students are required to take a drug test at a facility contracted by Confident Captain and RIMTA and undertake a United States Coast Guard physical. Lastly, applicants must document 120 days of service on small vessels. Ninety of those days must be in the past three years. Confident Captain will help students in the documentation process as part of the training.
