About USCG Captain’s License – 25/50/100 Ton Masters Course

Professional Captains License Ranging from 25-100 Gross Tons

The US Coast Guard Master 100 Gross Tons License allows its holder to captain any vessel up to 100 tons, regardless of whether or not it is inspected. Successful completion of our Master 100 GT course satisfies all 100 Ton educational requirements and prepares you to obtain a US Coast Guard-issued master’s license ranging from 25 to 100 GT.

Operate Vessels Including:

  • High-speed ferries
  • Whale watching boats
  • Charter boats carrying over six passengers
  • Vessels of other sizes and capacities up to 100 tons

Through 80 hours of curriculum, you can achieve your completion certificate. The Confident Captain learning method properly prepares you for operating a variety of small to mid-sized vessels.

Endorsements courses are held via Zoom the week of a Captain’s exam. You can sign up when you register or purchase them later on our Course Extras page. 

Pre Requisites

In order to participate in the course the following criteria must be met:

  • The candidate must be 19 years of age to enroll in a Master’s course
  • All candidates must have a firm understanding of the English language

Required Sea-time

  • At least 360 days of sea time
  • Each day of experience is defined by a minimum of 4 hours underway. The US Coast Guard makes exceptions for professional mariners working several shifts in one day and those who live aboard. Learn more about documenting your sea time.

Master Inland and Master Inland/OUPV Prerequisites

  • 360 days of sea-time
  • 90 of the 360 days must be within the last three years
  • All experience must be obtained after the age of 13
  • 50% of the experience must be obtained after the age of 16

Master Inland/Mate Near Coastal Prerequisites

  • 360 days of sea-time
  • 90 of the 360 days must be within the last 3 years
  • All experience must be obtained after the age of 13
  • 50% of the experience must be obtained after the age of 16
  • 180 of the 360 days must be outside the “boundary” line used for licensing purposes

Master Near Coastal (to 100NM offshore) Prerequisites

  • 720 days of sea-time
  • 90 of the 720 days must be within the last 3 years
  • All experience must be obtained after the age of 13
  • 50% of the experience must be obtained after the age of 16
  • 360 of the 720 days must be outside the “boundary” line used for licensing purposes

Course Outline

Confident Captain is adapting to bring you the tools to study for your USCG 25/50/100 Ton Captain’s License right from the comfort of your own home on your own time or with more structure.

How Instructor Led Courses Work Amid COVID-19

  1. Sign up for course dates
  2. A link to Zoom will be sent to you by your instructor
  3. Course lectures will be conducted over Zoom each day from 8:30am-4pm with breaks for assignments
  4. Sit for your exam in-person with us on the last day of the course in Newport, RI

How Self Guided Online Courses Work

  1. Register by choosing between the self-guided online course.
  2. You may register for your desired exam date and location at this point. Alternatively, you may decide to wait until you have had a chance to finish the course. That choice is yours.
  3. Upon registering, you will receive course login directions and details via email.
  4. Participate in the entire course and if you need help, you can sign up for tutoring with your Captain Instructor. (Extra fees apply) 
  5. Take and pass your exam with us.
  6. Receive your Course Completion Certificate.
  7. Fill out your USCG application using our student application guide.
  8. Send your application and certificate to the Coast Guard.
  9. Get your Captain’s License!

Course Assistance

Online students can email and even set up video conference calls for assistance with this course for an additional per hour fee. Additionally, online students are also able to sign up for a Course Coach, who acts as a personal resource to the student when and if they need the extra help.
