About Yachtmaster Offshore Sail Theory Course

The Yachtmaster Offshore/Coastal Theory course is designed for experienced skippers who wish to continue towards their Yachtmaster certification and be well prepared for more difficult passages such as offshore or night voyages.

This course offers shore-based modules taught in the Confident Captain classroom with our experienced instructors. Applicants of this course should have completed the RYA Day Skipper Course and/or have the prerequisite seatime prior to enrollment.

Pre Requisites

In order to enroll in Yachtmaster Offshore Sail Theory course, all candidates must meet the following applicable criteria:

Yachtmaster Offshore

Required Sea-time

  • 50 days, 5 as skipper, totaling 2,500 miles
    5 passages over 60 miles, including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper

Documentation

  • First Aid/CPR certification*
  • VHF/SRC*Copy of application*
  • 2 passport sized photos*

Yachtmaster Coastal

Required Sea-time

  • 30 days, 2 days as skipper, totaling 800 miles
  • 12 night hours (if you hold the Coastal Skipper course certificate this is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles, 12 night hours)
  • Half the qualifying sea time must be conducted in tidal waters

  • VHF/SRC*Copy of application*
  • 2 passport sized photos*

*These items do not need to be submitted to Confident Captain staff in order to enroll in the course, but will be required at the time of examination.

Course Outline

The Yachtmaster theory course is intensive and builds upon existing knowledge. Please arrive well prepared. There are many resources available as far as books and online to help with pre-course preparation and study. Topics covered in the course include:

  • Positions Fixing
  • Course Shaping and Plotting
  • Tidal Knowledge
  • Use of Almanacs and Admiralty Publications
  • Electronic Position Fixing Equipment
  • Taking and Interpreting Forecasts
  • Plotting Weather Systems
  • Weather Predictions by using a Barometer and by Observation
  • Collision Regulations
  • Customs and Excise Regulations for Cruising Abroad
