Ask Captain Kent: How Do I Document Sea Time from My Personal Boat?

Answer:

If you’re applying for a U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s License, such as the OUPV Six-Pack License or Master License, you’ll need to document your sea time. The process is simpler than you might think! The USCG does not require ship logs, receipts, or witness statements—they rely on your honesty and self-certification through the Small Vessel Sea Service Form (CG-719S).

Here’s how to properly document your sea service:

1. Use the Correct USCG Form

  • Download and complete CG-719S from the National Maritime Center (NMC) website or on MMSEAS.com.
  • This form is used to self-report your time on the water.

2. Be Honest and Accurate

  • The USCG relies on your truthful reporting—falsifying sea time is a federal offense.
  • Supporting documents are not required, but keeping personal records as best as you can is always a good idea.

3. What Counts as a “Day” of Sea Time?

  • One day of sea service is at least 4 hours on the water in a 24-hour period.
  • Time spent underway, at anchor, or drifting all counts toward your total sea time.

4. Provide Vessel Details

  • List your vessel’s name, length, gross tonnage (if known), propulsion type, and years of operation.

5. Submitting the Form

  • If you own the boat, you can self-certify your time.
  • If you operate but don’t own the boat, the vessel owner must sign the form.
  • Submit it with your application for a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).

Make the Process Easier with MM-SEAS

We highly recommend using MM-SEAS to digitize and advocate for your application. MM-SEAS simplifies the process, ensuring your sea time is properly documented and submitted correctly to avoid delays. Their platform helps mariners applying for:

  • OUPV Six-Pack Captain’s License
  • Master Captain’s License (25, 50, 100 Ton)
  • USCG License Renewals and Upgrades
