Through our USCG-approved courses, Confident Captain prepares mariners to confidently succeed in their careers.
I didn’t build Confident Captain to teach people how to memorize enough answers to pass an exam.
I built it because I believe there’s a difference between passing a test and becoming a Captain.
After more than 30 years as a professional captain, instructor, and maritime business owner, I’ve learned that good judgment comes from understanding, not memorization. My goal has always been to build practical, sensible training that prepares people for the responsibility that comes with the license, not just the exam.
If you understand the material, passing the exam takes care of itself. More importantly, you’ll leave with knowledge you can use every time you leave the dock.
Confident Captain offers dynamic, self-paced online courses that allow mariners to earn licenses and certifications for operating vessels up to 100 tons—on their own time. Our courses are meticulously designed by maritime experts with extensive real-world experience, ensuring that you receive top-quality training.

We offer an additional level of support for our learners to receive tailored advice from experienced captains who have navigated the challenges of the maritime industry themselves. This personal connection not only enhances the training experience but also fosters a sense of trust and accountability. Our mentors help learners identify their strengths, overcome weaknesses, and develop the leadership skills necessary to succeed on the water and in life.
Once you complete your training, you’ll gain access to ongoing support through our professional trade association membership The Professional Captains Assocation (PCA), the only one of its kind, ensuring you have the reputation and backing you need throughout your entire career at sea.
I earned my first captain’s license in 1992.
Back then, “captain’s school” meant sitting in front of a DOS computer with a pack of Marlboros, unlimited coffee from a vending machine, and one goal: memorize every possible Coast Guard question and answer you might see on the exam.
The coffee was actually pretty good.
The learning wasn’t.
It taught people how to pass a test, not how to become a captain. Every lesson I learned later on the water was that much harder because I had memorized answers instead of understanding the material.
More than 30 years later, the cigarettes are gone. The 3.5-inch floppy disks are gone. Even the vending machine coffee has disappeared.
Yet, somehow, too many people are still trying to earn a captain’s license the same way by memorizing possible Coast Guard questions and answers.
That never made sense to me.
I designed Confident Captain to be practical, easy to navigate, and built around helping people actually learn something. I wanted students to understand the material, not simply memorize enough answers to get through an exam.
Better yet, because our courses are Coast Guard approved, you don’t finish the course and then go somewhere else to take a Coast Guard exam.
You take my exam.
You learn from the same material you’re tested on. One course. One instructor. One complete learning experience.
It’s the captain’s school I wish I’d had in 1992.
I built it for you.
Captain Kent Dresser has spent more than 30 years building a career on the water as a professional captain, maritime instructor, business owner, leadership educator, and small craft operations expert. He earned his first captain’s license in 1992 and began his career in the quick-response marine assistance industry in Southern New England. Since then, he has participated in thousands of marine assistance and rescue operations, developed Coast Guard-approved training programs, and helped more than 10,000 mariners earn their credentials while becoming safer, more capable captains.
Captain Dresser holds a Bachelor of Arts in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island and a dual graduate degree from the University of Mary, earning both a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Arts in Philosophy. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Mary, where his dissertation examines how virtue-based leadership can improve decision-making, organizational culture, and operational performance in high-consequence organizations.
In addition to founding Confident Captain, Captain Dresser has consulted with government agencies, public utilities, private industry, and nonprofit organizations on leadership, risk management, safety, and organizational performance. His practical experience, combined with graduate research in leadership and ethics, shapes every course we teach.
Throughout his career, Captain Dresser has remained committed to one simple belief: people deserve more than a course that teaches them how to pass an exam. They deserve practical instruction that helps them understand the material, build confidence, and become better captains long after the test is over.
That philosophy continues to guide every course, every lesson, and every student who joins Confident Captain.
