Q&A with Captain Kate Somers:
Q: Why did you get your Captain’s License?
A: It just gives me options and keeps doors open in my career. I had the sea time, and my husband runs a boatyard where they sometimes need help with launches. Plus, at events I work on, I often need to drive photographers around. This license is just another tool in my skill set. Also, taking the course after developing it allowed me to tweak the content to make it the best it could be for students.
Q: What was the most challenging part of the online course for you?
A: Remembering how to take a test! I knew the material, but taking the time to read each question carefully and double-check my answers was something I had to remind myself to do.
Q: How has having your Captain’s License impacted your career?
A: It’s given me more credibility in the marine industry. Whether I’m working on media projects or involved in events, having the license shows that I’m not just someone behind a screen—I’m actively involved and understand what it takes to be on the water. It has also opened up new opportunities, like being able to assist with boat handling or transport during events, which keeps me hands-on and engaged.
